Pinea DC Art | #PineaDCArt
In collaboration with curator Banafsheh Ghassemi, Pinea has commissioned renowned Baltimore-based street artist, GAIA to create an original art mural wall in the restaurant’s dining room.
at W Washington, D.C.
The mural illustrates a journey going back to the Roman Empire and ending at present day Washington D.C., brought together by the marble Augustus adorned in citrus and herbs, a humorous nod to the Mediterranean cuisine of Pinea. The abandoned building at the center of Augustus’ breastplate represents the recent renewal of Washington D.C. The other central figure on the wall is Jean-Baptiste Belley, a former slave who bought his own freedom and later was among those who led the Haitian Revolution aimed at resisting and overthrowing colonial regime and ending slavery.
Drawing inspiration from the Beaux-art and Classical Revivalism genres popularized by the historic Hotel Washington’s original architects, Carrere and Hastings, the sprawling work occupies the restaurant’s back wall, which measures 35 feet in length and 14-1/2 feet in height. A second, smaller piece featuring a black eagle motif greets patrons upon entering the dining room.
Our Urban Times in 2011 predicted that Gaia "will no doubt be part of the art establishment of tomorrow.” In 2015, the New York native and Maryland Institute College of Art-educated muralist was named to Forbes 30 Under 30 2015 List for Art & Style.
Pinea joins landmarks in Buenos Aires, Seoul, London, Amsterdam, Vienna, and Perth as a destination with an original Gaia mural. Guests, locals, and passersby are encouraged to join the conversation via social media and engage with the piece by sharing their picture perspectives of the mural using the hashtag #PineaDCArt.
